An old businessman, known as the Boss, meets with Mr. Woodifield, a visitor who reminds him of painful memories from the past. After the visitor leaves, the Boss begins to think about his son, who died in the war. Alone in his office, he notices a fly trapped in his ink. As he watches the insect struggle to survive, the Boss begins to test how much the small creature can endure.
